The Ruby-throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris), 2024

5.56" x 5.38" x 4.06"

Hand painted acrylic on recycled cigar box sealed with satin varnish

Male Ruby-throated hummingbirds fly back in forth in a wide U-shaped pendulum in front of a female they are courting. They make a whirring sound as they dive each way. They also dart back and forth in front of the perched female. The female builds the nest in a tree or large shrub, on a branch that is horizontal or slopes down from the trunk, surrounded by leafy covering. She creates a compact cup of grasses, plant fibers, and spider webs, lined with plant debris. She cleverly camouflages the outside with lichens and dead leaves. There she will solely lay 2 eggs that she will feed and care for alone. Ruby-throated hummingbirds generally have 1-2 broods per year.
